Protein Powder For Women - What to Look For in a Protein Powder For Women

The growth in the use of protein powders in recent years has been pretty astounding. Once seen as the domain of hardcore bodybuilders, they are now becoming a part of most workout routines and weight loss diets, and the use of protein powders among women continues to pick up pace.

Folic Acids

Now, as we know, men and women have physical differences and so have different requirements when it comes to nutrition. So naturally, we ask ourselves...

Folic Acids

Are most protein powders ok for women to use or are they made specifically for men?

What's the main difference between a protein powder for women and one for men?

What should a woman look for when she goes shopping for protein?

In general most protein powders these days are designed for BOTH the man and woman in mind. They often provide separate serving suggestions for men and women, since a woman's required protein intake is naturally lower than a man's. A serving for a woman should typically contain around 20 grams of protein.

The main difference between protein powders made specially for women is that they tend to contain less carbs, fats and sugars, and often have extra vitamins that are essential for women's health - things like Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, and Iron.

When looking for a good protein powder for women, try to get something derived from protein isolates rather than concentrates. Although there is not a huge difference between the two, the one containing isolates tends to have a lower content of carbs and fats, and is absorbed slightly quicker into the body.

If you're using protein powder for women as part of a weight loss diet, watch out for the sodium levels in some protein powders...sometimes these are added to increase flavour. Avoid anything that uses flavour enhancers like monosodium glutamate as these will tend to make you hungry and crave sugary foods.

Soy protein is good for dieters as it is a low-GI food and sugar-free so you won't have to worry about excess sugar intake.

List Of Medicines To Avoid While Pregnant

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has prepared a list of medicines to avoid while pregnant. It possesses a system that ranks drugs with regards to their safety during pregnancy. However, not all drugs are subject to tests to ensure their safety to pregnant women. Therefore, it is advisable to take any medication, only after consultation with your doctor.

Folic Acids

The FDA Ranking Of Drugs

Folic Acids

"A" Category - these drugs have been tested in terms of safety parameters and have been found harmless during pregnancy. They are vitamin B6, folic acid, and thyroid medication, in moderate or prescribed amounts.

"B" Category - these drugs have been utilized much during pregnancy and are not found to cause any big birth disorders or other pregnancy side effects. They include acetaminophen (Tylenol), certain antibiotics, aspartame (artificial sweetener), prednisone (cortisone), famotidine (Pepcid), ibuprofin (Advil, Motrin), and insulin (for diabetes). However, during the last trimester, ibuprofen is not recommended.

"C" Category - these drugs have possibilities to create complications during pregnancy. Some of them are in the trial stage of safety tests. Such drugs contain a warning that they should be used only if they are absolutely necessary and as a last resort. The medications to avoid during pregnancy are Sudafed, prochlorperzaine (Compazine), ciprofloxacin (Cipro), and fluconazole (Diflucan).

"D" Catergory - these drugs show clear risks for health of the developing fetus. They contain alcohol, phenytoin (Dilantin), and lithium (used in the treatment of manic depression). The chemotherapy drugs used for cancer treatment also come in this list. However, in certain cases, such drugs have to be administered during pregnancy. They should be done so under strict medical supervision.

"X" Category - these drugs have been proved to cause birth disorders and pregnant women must never take them. Such medicines include psoriasis (Tegison or Soriatane) and cystic acne (Accutane), which are used for skin treatment; thalidomide, which is a sedative; and diethylstilbestrol (DES), which had been used for prevention of miscarriage in America until 1971 and in Europe until 1993.

The other drugs that come in the list are aspirin and salicylate containing drugs. They are particularly harmful in the last trimester. In case it's absolutely essential to use such drugs, they should be used under close scrutiny. You should also avoid the use of certain over-the-counter painkillers, as most of them contain cetylsalicaylate. This compound may make your pregnancy longer and even cause bleeding before and/or after childbirth.

Talk to your doctor, and read books and articles to know more about medicines to avoid while pregnant.

Importance of Complete Vitamin B's in Supplements

Feeding a supplement missing key ingredients is like trying to drive down the road without air in the tires of the vehicle. Why do so many people feed supplements that only contain a few vitamins/minerals and then expect to attain peak performance from their equine partner. My life is very busy and full and I want things to be as easy as possible - thus I want all the ingredients in one container and I expect them to do their job. It seems very time consuming to have 3-5 containers of 'supplements' that I must feed my horse daily and still be missing important nutrients. Also, that means I have more waste products that I must get rid of and each product is a different size with a different suggested feeding. KISS Keep it Simple ***** That is my motto and I try to follow it.

Folic Acids

Vitamins are essential to life - they regulate metabolism and assist the biochemical processes that release energy from digested food and are the foundation of body functions. Some are water soluble which cannot be stored in the body so therefore they must be taken into the body daily - includes Vitamin C and B-complexes. In most supplements there are only some of the B vitamins included in the ration. It is important to have all the vitamin B's present in a ration as each one has a job to do and if one or more is missing then the 'jobs' are not done to the extent they should be. Sure, you will see some improvement, but if you are going to doing something do it to the best of your ability.

Folic Acids

I am going to emphasize the B vitamins which help to maintain the health of nerves, skin, eyes, hair, liver, and mouth as well as healthy muscle tone in the gastrointestinal tract and proper brain function. They act as coenzymes, helping enzymes to react chemically with other substances and are involved in energy production. They may be useful for alleviating depression or anxiety and it has been found that hyperactivity and aggressiveness in horses and dogs can sometimes be remedied by B-complexes. Other indications for giving your dog or horse extra vitamins are during highly stressful situations such as traveling, separation anxiety, the show ring, during pregnancy and being a stressed mother. Sulfa drugs, hormone therapy, cortisone and drugs for high blood pressure rob you animal of some of the B-complex vitamins. These vitamins are very important for older horses because these nutrients are not as well absorbed as they age. Because B vitamins work together, a deficiency in one often indicates a deficiency in another.

1. Vitamin B1 ( Thiamine)

Thiamine enhances circulation and assists in blood formation, carbohydrate metabolism and production of hydrochloric acid which is important for proper digestion. It has a positive effect on energy, growth, normal appetite and learning capacity and is needed for proper muscle tone of the intestines, stomach and heart. Also, acts as an antioxidant, protecting the body from degenerative effects.

Symptoms that can result from thiamine deficiency include constipation, edema, enlarged liver, fatigue, heart changes, irritability, labored breathing, loss of appetite, muscle atrophy, nervousness, poor coordination, weak and sore muscles and severe weight loss. Antibiotics, phenytoin (Dilantin- drug used to prevent seizures), sulfa drugs, antibiotics may decrease thiamine levels in the body and a high carbohydrate diet increases the need for thiamine.

2. Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)

Riboflavin is necessary for red blood cell formation, anti-body production, cell respiration, and growth. It alleviates eye fatigue and is important in the prevention and treatment of cataracts. It aids in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, Together with vitamin A it maintains and improves the mucous membranes in the digestive tract. Riboflavin also facilitates the used of oxygen by the tissues of the skin, nails, and hair, eliminates dandruff, and helps the absorption of iron and vitamin B6. Consumption of adequate amounts or riboflavin is important during pregnancy because a lack of this vitamin can damage a developing fetus, it is needed for the metabolism of the amino acid tryptophan, which is converted into niacin in the body.

Deficiency symptoms include cracks and sores at the corners of the mouth, eye disorders, inflammation of the mouth and tongue, skin lesions, dermatitis, dizziness, hair loss, insomnia, light sensitivity, poor digestion, retarded growth, and slowed mental response and stool eating. Strenuous exercise requires an increase in the need for riboflavin.

3. Vitamin B3 (Niacin)

Niacin is needed for proper circulation and healthy skin. It aids in the functioning of the nervous system, in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins and in the production of hydrochloric acid for the digestive system. It is involved in the normal secretion of bile an stomach fluids and in the synthesis of sex hormones. Other symptoms of niacin deficiency include canker sores, depression, diarrhea, fatigue, limb pain, loss of appetite, muscular weakness, skin eruptions and inflammation.

4. Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)

Pantothenic Acid is known as "the anti-stress vitamin" - Pantothenic acid plays a role in the production of the adrenal hormones and the formation of antibodies, aids in vitamin utilization and helps to covert fats, carbohydrates and proteins into energy. It is required by all cells in the body and is concentrated in the organs. It is also involved in the production of neurotransmitters. This vitamin is an essential element of coenzyme A, a vital body chemical involved in many necessary metabolic functions. Pantothenic acid is also a stamina enhancer and prevents certain forms of anemia. It is needed for normal function of the gastrointestinal tract and may be helpful in treating depression and anxiety.

5. Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)

Pyridoxine is involved in more body functions than almost any other single nutrient affecting both physical and mental health. It is necessary for the production of hydrochloric acid and the absorption of fats and protein. It also aids in maintaining sodium and potassium balance and promotes red blood cell formations. it is required by the nervous system and is needed for normal brain function and for the synthesis of the nuclei acids, RNA and DNA, which contain the genetic instructions for the reproduction of all cells and for normal cellular growth. It activates many enzymes and aids in the absorption of vitamin B12, the immune system functions and in antibody production. Vitamin B6 plays a role cancer immunity and aids in the prevention of arteriosclerosis, acts as a mild diuretic and useful in preventing oxalate kidney stones and in the treatment of allergies, arthritis and asthma.

A deficiency of can result in anemia, convulsions, impaired wound healing, inflammation of the mouth and gums, hearing problems, stunted growth, brain damage, heart and liver disease.

6. Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin)

Cyanocobalamin is needed to prevent anemia, it aids folic acid in regulating the formation of red blood cells and help in utilization of iron. It is required for proper digestion, absorption of foods, the synthesis of protein, and the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats. It aids in cell formation and cellular longevity. Vitamin B12 prevents nerve damage, maintains fertility and promotes normal growth and development by maintaining the fatty sheaths that cover and protect nerve endings.

A deficiency can be caused by mal-absorption, which is most common in the elderly and in those with digestive disorders. Deficiency can cause abnormal gait, bone loss, constipation, depression, digestive disorders, enlargement of the liver, eye disorders, and inflammation of the tongue, irritability, labored breathing, moodiness, nervousness, neurological damage, palpitations, pernicious anemia, and spinal cord degeneration.

Biotin

Biotin aids in cell growth, fatty acid production, in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins and in the utilization of other B-complex vitamins. Sufficient quantities are needed for healthy hair and skin. It promotes healthy sweat glands, nerve tissue and bone marrow and helps to relieve muscle pain. Biotin strengthens hoof structure by reducing irregularities in the hoof wall that compromise the integrity of the hoof strength.

Fats and oils that have been subjected to heat or exposed to the air for any length of time inhibit biotin absorption as do antibiotics, sulfa drugs. A deficiency can result in anemia, skin disorders, hair loss, heart disease and weak muscles

Each vitamin B has important functions in the horse's body and if some are lacking then optimal health is not obtained. The body needs ALL the B vitamins as they work together. Thus, it is very important to read the label and know what you are feeding. Feed for heath.

Five Steps to Getting Rid of Canker Sores on Your Tongue

Although no one has yet been able to find a cure-all for canker sores, there are plenty of steps you can take to reduce your risk. Canker sores on the tongue, mouth, and cheek are normally quite painful, which is probably why you are reading this article. So, let's get right into it.

Folic Acids

• One of the most common causes of cankers is physical trauma to the mouth. Sometimes this comes from dental work like braces or dentures, or even from sports or biting the side of your cheek accidentally while chewing gum. If you know you are prone to them (more than 3 or 4 times a month), you would be wise to avoid chewing gum, and if you have braces, you can ask your dentist for orthodontic wax to cover the sharp edges.

Folic Acids

• Watch what you eat. You'll notice that certain foods seem to trigger an outbreak of cankers, like pretzels or potato chips, even acidic fruits like lemon, pineapple, or oranges. One approach to preventative needed treatment is to keep what's called a "food diary" and compare it at the end of the month with your canker sore outbreaks.

• Another good reason to do the food journal thing is that some people get canker sores because of vitamin or nutritional deficiencies. Some of the vitamins and nutrients that may be at fault include B1, B2, B6, B12, C, zinc, folic acid, iron, calcium, and selenium. Go over the food journal results with your doctor and see if he thinks a blood test might reveal anything lacking.

• A simple canker cure that many people have used is just changing to a toothpaste that doesn't contain sodium lauryl sulfate. Almost all the toothpastes on the market today include this compound, which is also used as an engine degreaser and floor cleaner, and is a powerful surfactant. Toothpaste companies like it because it makes happy bubbles when you brush your teeth; your mouth may not like it so much.

• Try to relax. Some evidence links cankers on the tongue, cheeks, and mouth to higher stress levels, specifically to students during exam time who reported a higher incidence of cankers. But students aren't the only ones who experience stress; emotional or psychological stress can come from work or home as well. Exercise, prayer, or just a much-needed vacation can be just the canker sore cure you needed in that case. Hey, when life hands you lemons...

What Are the Health Benefits of Folic Acid?

Here you can learn about the health benefits of folic acid, folate or vitamin B9. How to take and how much are important, please read carefully.

Folic Acids

The terms are all used to describe this water-soluble vitamin.

Folic Acids

Folic Acid - A Must Have

It is one of the essential vitamins, meaning that the body must have it to function, but cannot produce it. If it is not present in the foods that we eat, serious health problems will ensue.

Folate & Pregnancy

Pregnant women and those that could become pregnant are advised to take a supplement, because low intake during the very early stages of pregnancy could cause birth defects like spina bifida. The defects are known as neural tube defects and are still the most common ones, even in industrialized societies. In neural tube defects, there is an abnormal opening in the brain or spinal cord. The result can be paralysis, brain damage or stillbirth.

Vitamin B9 & Red Blood Cells

Children and adults require the nutrient to produce red blood cells. Low intake of the nutrient on a continuous basis may not result in an obvious deficiency, but could lead to the development of cancer, because the nutrient is necessary for the production and maintenance of all of the cells of the body.

Folate Deficiency & Heart Disease

The health benefits of folic acid supplementation may be numerous. Folate deficiency increases a person's risk of heart disease and stroke. The incidence of ischemic heart disease and stroke in the US has reduced by 15%, since food manufacturers were required to fortify breads and cereals with the nutrient.

Sources of Folic Acid

The best source of the nutrient is actually dark leafy greens. Beans and peas are also a good source. Other fruits and vegetables provide a significant amount. So, it is not that the nutrient occurs in few foods. It is that people's dietary preferences have them eating more breads and cereals. Thus fortification was believed to be important and seems to be effective.

Depression, Obesity, Type II Diabetes

Other health benefits of folic acid supplementation have to do with depression and obesity. There are several studies indicating that the supplements are beneficial in treating depression and may have a role in the prevention of obesity and type II diabetes.

Folic Acid - How to Take & How Much

Another study concerned memory and mental agility in older people. Verbal fluency and short term memory was found to be better in people taking a supplement. But, simply meeting your minimum daily requirements for the nutrient will not provide that benefit. Twice the current RDA was given to the participants in the study.

Although there may be many health benefits of folic acid supplementation, it is important to take other B vitamins and nutrients along with it. A single-ingredient supplement could interfere with the absorption of B12 and other nutrients.

Multi-Supplement Approach

It always makes more sense to take a well-designed multi-nutritional formula, even if you feel that you are eating a balanced diet and getting most of the essential nutrients through the foods that you eat. For one thing, the minimum recommended daily allowances may provide only minimally good health, as exemplified by the study concerning memory in the elderly.

What you have read about here are just a few of the health benefits of folic acid. There are others that you might be interested in.

And now please visit the TotallyBalancedSupplements website listed below for more important information on the health benefits of Folic Acid (Folate, Vitamin B9).

Boric Acid For Yeast Infection Treatment

Boric acid capsules used as vaginal suppositories can be an effective remedy for yeast infections in some women. Boric acid acidifies the vagina, which restores the natural balance of bacteria and yeast.

Folic Acids

Boric acid can be particularly useful for people with chronic yeast infections that haven't responded to over-the-counter or prescription anti-fungal medications. Some pharmacies can prepare boric acid capsules for you. Ask for size "0" gelatin capsule filled with 600 mg of powdered boric acid in each capsule.

Folic Acids

One capsule is typically inserted at night before going to bed. Some people may need to take it in the morning and the evening. It can be taken with a vitamin E capsule or used with vitamin E oil to reduce the chances of irritation.

Yeast infection treatment typically takes three to seven days. Chronic yeast infections may require a longer treatment. Using boric acid suppositories for more than a week can cause irritation of the vulva and vagina.

Because boric acid is a strong substance there are some precautions associated with its use. Consider the following:

o Boric acid is toxic and should never be taken orally or placed on cuts or open wounds.

o Side effects may include severe irritation and burning.

o Boric acid should never be used during pregnancy.

In addition to boric acid there are other home remedies that are sometimes used to treat yeast infections. Many women use yogurt to help clear up yeast infections. Yogurt contains lactobacillus acidophilus, a bacterium that occurs naturally in healthy vaginas. Acidophilus kills yeast by producing hydrogen peroxide in the vagina. To use this method, a tampon is soaked in yogurt and inserted into the vagina. Yogurt can also be applied directly to the vulva to relieve itching and burning. Make sure that you use plain, unflavored yogurt that contains absolutely no sugar.

Many holistic practitioners advise eating yogurt daily to help prevent yeast and other fungal infections. Drink at least two glasses of buttermilk daily, whether you've got the infection or not. This will drastically reduce the chances of infection.

Tea tree oil that is widely available in natural food stores is another popular yeast infection remedy. Simply soak a tampon in tea tree oil and insert it into the vagina. Gentian violet is a traditional remedy for yeast and other infections that pre-dates most modern antifungals and antibiotics. To use this method you "paint" the vagina and vulva with gentian violet. Just one treatment is often enough to cure yeast infection.

While you are treating a yeast infection with boric acid or other remedies, you can use a paste made from slippery elm powder and water to relieve the itching and burning. Another option is to keep aloe vera in the refrigerator and soak into a cotton pad. This can be applied to the vulva as needed. Some women use an over the counter topical cream, like Vagisil, to relieve the uncomfortable symptoms associated with yeast infections.

Talk to your holistic practitioner about boric acid to help determine if the treatment is right for you. Boric acid can be a safe, inexpensive and effective treatment for yeast infection.
