5 Signs and Symptoms of Folic Acid Deficiency

Folic Acid is one of your body's essential nutrients! It is important for everything from brain function to cardiovascular health. Folic Acid deficiency is the most common deficiency of any of the B vitamins. It also works along with vitamin B-12 for formation of red blood cells.

Folic Acids

Some of the signs and symptoms you would want to look out for would include:

Folic Acids

oIrritability or Depression- Because of folic acids importance in your central nervous system you may experience symptoms such as irritability, sluggishness, forgetfulness, or depression.

oHigh Homocysteine Levels- Along with other B-Vitamins, folic acid works to lower homocysteine levels. People with high homocysteine levels have been shown to have a higher increase in cardiovascular events such as heart attacks.

oBirth Defects and Miscarriage- Folic acid is critical in the development of your fetus. Folic acid supplements are recommended to women that are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.

oSome Cancers- Some cancers have been associated with abnormally low levels of folic acid.

oDiarrhea and loss of appetite- Many vitamin deficiencies have been linked to gastrointestinal complaints.

It is very important to identify why your body may be deficient in folic acid!

Are you eating enough foods that are rich in folic acid, such as spinach and other green leafy vegetables, soybeans, salmon, or orange juice?

Are you taking any prescription or over the counter drug that has been shown to either lower folic acid levels, or increase your bodies need for folic acid such as oral contraceptives, aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs, antacids such as Zantac, Pepcid or Tagamet, or metformin for diabetes?

Should Men Take Folic Acid?

Should men take folic acid is a question that maybe not enough women or men ask! I think that it is a reasonably well known fact that women need to take it both before conception and during pregnancy but the facts about men taking it are less clear. It is recommended that women take folic acid for at least a month before conceiving and for the first trimester of the pregnancy. It is not recommended that it is taken after 30 weeks as there has been anecdotal evidence of it having bad side effects after this time, including the small risk of the child getting asthma in later life.

Folic Acids

The reason for taking folic acid is that this has been shown to significantly reduce the chance of a baby being born with Neural Tube Defects (NTDs). These are defects that generally affect the spine and nerves of the baby and the most well known of these is Spina Bifida. It is estimated that taking folic acid reduces the risk of neural tube defects by 50 to 70%.

Folic Acids

So in answer to the question 'Should Men Take Folic Acid?', the answer is actually yes. It does not only apply to women. Although it is not a government recommendation like it is for women who are trying to become pregnant, it is advisable that men also take folic acid supplements for a few months before trying to have a baby with their partner.

The reason that men should take folic acid is that it has been shown to improve the quality of the sperm that a man produces. This can also reduce the risks of their partner giving birth to a baby with an NTD. But not only this, as it improves the quality of sperm, this also improves the woman's chances of getting pregnant. With more mobile sperm, the chances of conceiving are increased.

So how much folic acid should a man take? Well the recommended dose for both men and women is the same at 400 micrograms a day. It is advisable to take this as a vitamin supplement as, although a lot of food including leafy green vegetables, some fortified cereals and some breads contain folate, the intake of folate (the natural form of folic acid) just from food is not likely to be as much as 400 micrograms per day (and in any case it is not possible to overdose on it so you can take more than 400 mcg per day if you combine the supplement with the natural form).

It is also recommended that men take some other vitamins to improve the quality of their sperm, such as vitamin C and vitamin E as well as zinc. So the best bet is to try and get hold of a multivitamin supplement that includes all of the above vitamins and take this on a daily basis, if you can for 3 months before conception.

Folic Acid RDA - Uncover the Recommended Daily Intake of Folic Acid to Supercharge Your Health!

Are you aware of just how vital it is for you to get the right amount nutrients everyday? Many people haven't got a clue as to how much they need of certain vitamins and minerals to stay healthy.

Folic Acids

Most people know that they need these nutrients, but if asked just how much they need each day, they couldn't tell you. This is why the RDA came to be.

Folic Acids

RDA stands for Recommended Daily Amount or Recommended Dietary Allowances and is included in the ingredients list of many products, especially vitamin and mineral supplements. What is the folic acid RDA? Why is it important that you follow it?

Folic acid is vital to your red blood cells and their correct production. It is also important to your DNA in that it helps to keep balance so you won't have certain diseases like cancer develop.

This folate is responsible for preventing birth defects and is also responsible for the blood being able to carry oxygen due to having enough blood cells to properly do so.

What is the RDA for you? This is going to depend on your age and whether you are male or female. Your weight or height doesn't matter in these kinds of calculations. The highest RDA's are for those women who are nursing or pregnant.

The lowest are for children. Infants do not require any extra supplementation. Making sure to get these RDA's of folic acid every single day is going to ensure the promotion of your good health.

Are you getting the right amounts of the necessary nutrients that your body needs on a daily basis? Can you honestly say that you eat the balanced diet that is required to get these kinds of nutrients?

Did you know that your body doesn't make its own folic acid and you have to get it from an outside source? Did you also know that you aren't getting the best RDA of folic acid from your food?

Our food in these modern times are depleted on nutrients as they grow. Our soils are contaminated with toxins from fertilizers and pesticides. Our meats are foiled with antibiotics and hormones that are injected into livestock for disease prevention and to make for larger animals.

No matter if you are buying organic food or if you are growing your own, food loses these nutrients during time of storage and during cooking.

The best and only way to make sure that you are getting the correct RDA of nutrients is to take a natural multivitamin supplement everyday.

You will want one that passes GMP regulations and has other ingredients like specialty nutrients and herbal extracts from olive leaf and bacopa.

The addition of these kinds of herbal extracts adds to absorption of vitamins and minerals while at the same time offering antioxidant protection. In this way you will also get the right folic acid RDA.

Side Effects Of Folic Acid

There are some side effects of Folic Acid that you should be aware of. While they rarely occur you need to identify them so that you can see your doctor about reducing the amount you take or stop taking it all together. The side effects can be mild or severe. Mild side effects include are nausea, loss of appetite, bloated abdomen, flatulence, bitter taste, insomnia or difficulty concentrating. Your doctor will likely reduce the amount of Folic Acid you take and monitor the results closely.

Folic Acids

If you are experiencing severe side effects to Folic Acid such as difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of your lips, tongue or face, or hives then you need to see immediate medical attention and stop taking the Folic Acid. Other side effects that have been noted include fever, general weakness or discomfort, reddened skin, shortness of breath, skin rash or itching, and wheezing and they can vary in severity.

Folic Acids

The University of Maryland reports that the instances of having a side effect from Folic Acid is rare but if you take a large dose of 15,000 mcg or more you may experience stomach pain, disrupted sleep patterns, skin reactions, and seizures. According to the Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine, Folic Acid is very safe in doses of 5,000 mcg or less. It is the larger doses that cause the side effects including nausea, decreased appetite, bloating, gas, decreased ability to concentrate, and insomnia to occur. If you suffer from seizures a large dose of Folic Acid will affect the effectiveness of the common medication Phenytoin, also known as Dilantin.

If you take Folic Acid, you should add a supplement of B Vitamins, especially 12, because the Folic Acid can lead to a deficiency. While the side effects from Folic Acid rarely occur, the risk is higher if you have a Vitamin B deficiency. If you experience any of these symptoms while taking Folic Acid, make sure you talk to your doctor so action can be taken.

Ortho Molecular Folic Acid 5mg 120 Capsules Overview

Folic acid plays To ensure the biochemical pathways that facilitate the conversion of homocysteine to less harmful molecules are supplied with the necessary co-factors and precursors. Several of these ingredients have been shown in clinical trials to reduce serum homocysteine levels. Why These Natural Ingredients? Vitamin B12 A required co-factor in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine via the folate pathway, vitamin B12 deficiency is common among vegans and the elderly. Vitamin B6 Vitamin B6 is known to be deficient in the typical American diet, particularly the elderly. Even low doses have been shown to lower homocysteine levels in elderly patients-even among those previously supplemented with folic acid. Betaine (TMG) Betaine (trimethyl glycine, or TMG) acts as a methyl donor to homocysteine-converting it to methionine. This conversion pathway occurs in the liver and kidney and may contribute to homocysteine reduction in some individuals with very high methionine, or after ingestion of high levels of methionine. Folic Acid A required component for the conversion of homocysteine to methionine, Folic Acid supplementation reduces homocysteine levels as demonstrated in many clinical studies. Regardless of initial homocysteine levels, increased folic acid supplementation (up to 800 mcg) has been shown in research to enhance an increased homocysteine lowering effect. Those with higher initial homocysteine levels had greater lowering effects with Folic Acid. Low levels of daily Folic Acid intake have been associated with high serum homocysteine levels, especially in the elderly. Current research is showing that aggressive homocysteine management is more beneficial than previously thought.a large role in the reduction of homocysteine.

Good Sources Of Folic Acid

Folic acid is a vital vitamin for good physical and mental wellbeing, however it is also the B vitamin that people are most likely to be deficient in. In order to ensure that you get the correct amount of folic acid it is important that you eat foods rich in this vitamin. If you are going to take a folic acid supplement you need to take a good B vitamin supplement as well containing the other B vitamins, especially vitamin B12 as folic acid may mask symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency.

Folic Acids

An excellent source of folic acid are cereals that have been fortified with 100%DV (400 mcg) of folic acid. The National Institute of Health, office of dietary supplements explains the term DV, "DV's are reference numbers developed by the Food and Drug administration (FDA) to help consumers determine if a food contains a lot or a little of a specific nutrient. The DV for folate is 400 micrograms.A food providing 5% of the DV or less is a low source while a food that provides 10-19% of the DV is a good source. A food that provides 20% or more of the DV is high in that nutrient."

Folic Acids

Three ounces of cooked, braised beef liver is an excellent source of folic acid offering 45%DV. The next good sources of folic acid are cowpeas and cereals fortified with 25%DV, both of these sources have a 25%DV. For the cowpeas you will need to have half a cup of immature cowpeas (also known as blackeyes) which have been boiled.

Half a cup of frozen spinach that has been boiled also contains a 25%DV for folic acid and is one of the foods normally recommended to increase your intake of folic acid.

Half a cup of great northern beans that have been boiled, as well as 4 boiled asparagus spears contain a DV of 20% and can also be used to increase your intake of folic acid.

A number of other foods contain a DV between 10 and 15% such as vegetarian baked beans, raw spinach, green peas, broccoli, egg noodles, avocado, peanuts, lettuce, wheat germ, tomato juice and orange juice.

By following a diet that contains plenty of fruit and vegetables, especially the dark green, leafy vegetables as well as taking cereals that have been enriched with folic acid allows you to ensure you are getting enough folic acid in your diet. There are many good sources of folic acid and a large variety of meals can be planned using the sources mentioned above. Have a look at the DV of folic acid or folate on the foods you buy and try to achieve 100% DV daily for maximum benefits.

Discover What Foods Have Folic Acid

Folate is a naturally occuring nutrition. When bio synthesised folic acid is formed. This is an important nutrition for our health. Obviously many people are curious to know what foods have folic acid.

Folic Acids

Broadly we can classify only two types of foods having this nutrition. One is natural fruits, vegetables and meat products and the other is foods fortified with folic acid.

Folic Acids

Natural foods rich in folate are green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, legumes and liver. Moderate folate is present in all other fruits and vegetables. Obviously if you take spinach, broccoli, green turnips, lentils, peas, beans, orange, pineapple, strawberry, pig liver etc., you will get high amount of folate.

There are breads and breakfast cereals fortified with folic acid. They are the instant source of adding this nutrition to our health.

When we talk about what foods have folic acid it is important to know the required minimum dosage of this nutrition. Generally 400 mcg per day is required for an adult. In the case of pregnant woman it should be 600 mcg per day. The problem is to get such quantum through natural sources like fruits, vegetables and meat. They are the best sources but they have to be supplemented with natural nutrition supplements.

Folate is important for cell formation and growth. Deficiency of folate will retard overall growth of a child. Folate is very important for a pregnant woman to ensure that the baby is born without any damage to its brain and spine. This nutrition is imporant for production of red blood cells. Anemia is the result of folate deficiency. Apart from these there are other symptoms like diarrhea, heart palpitation, loss of appetite, loss of weight etc., may be encountered. However it is very important to consult the physician before taking exclusive folic acid supplement.

The best option is to keep your normal diet including moderate consumption of the above fruits, vegetables and meat supplemented with a reliable natural nutrition supplement. In the midst of many cheap and spurious supplements made out of synthetic products finding a genuine product is not that easy. I have found a fantastic natural nutrition supplement that has more than 70 natural herbs and salts including folate in an appropriate dosage. This offers not only total balanced nutrition but also synergy. This is the holistic way to provide nutrition to our health. Check out my website to know more than what foods have folic acid.

Nature Made Folic Acid 600 mcg with DHA - 300 Softgels Overview

Folic acid, also known as folate and folacin, is essential in cell division, DNA synthesis, and the manufacturing of brain chemicals, or neurotransmitters in the body. Without adequate levels of folic acid, cells do not divide properly. Folic acid is vital to the development of the nervous system of a fetus. A deficiency of folic acid during pregnancy has been linked to several birth defects, such as the neural tube defect spina bifida. Therefore, it is critical for women of child-bearing age to consume 400 mcg of folic acid per day. In addition, folic acid may also play a significant role in heart health. It does so by helping to keep homocysteine levels down in the blood. Homocysteine is a substance that formed when Vitamin B12 and folic acid levels are low, and research has indicated it may be a possible risk factor for heart health. Folic acid is recommended to be part of a daily regimen for Womens Health, Stress, Heart Health, Mood/Emotional Well-Being, Prenatal. Healthful diets with adequate folate may reduce a women`s risk of having a child with a brain or spinal cord birth defect. The Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences recommends that women capable of becoming pregnant consume 400 mcg of folic acid per day.
